Grand Shasta
Photo Location: Siskiyou County
Grand Shasta captures one of Northern California's most striking mountain views, with the snow-covered summit of Mount Shasta rising beyond Castle Lake and the surrounding forest.
Photographed during a summer sunset, the scene brings together two very different scales of the landscape. Castle Lake rests quietly below, surrounded by deep green forest, while Mount Shasta dominates the distant horizon. As the sun moved lower, warm evening light softened the mountain and surrounding landscape, creating a brief balance between the lake, forest and volcanic peak.
What makes this viewpoint particularly distinctive is Castle Lake itself. Seen from above, its shoreline takes on the shape of a heart, creating a natural foreground that draws the eye through the landscape toward Mount Shasta. The combination of the lake's unusual shape, the surrounding wilderness and the enormous mountain beyond is what made this scene worth photographing.
