One of the hardest parts of buying large artwork online is understanding scale.
A 48-inch photograph and a 96-inch photograph can look almost identical
when both are displayed at the same width on your computer or phone.
In your home, however, the difference is dramatic.
The size of the artwork determines whether it feels like a picture hanging
on the wall or an architectural part of the room itself. Furniture, ceiling
height, available wall space and viewing distance all affect how large
fine art feels once it is installed.
"The right artwork is important. The right artwork at the right scale
can transform the entire room."
To make choosing easier, the examples below use an approximately
84-inch-wide sofa as a familiar reference point.
The artwork is scaled relative to the sofa so you can see how different
print widths occupy the same wall.
Understanding The Examples
- Sofa width: approximately 84 inches
- Artwork widths shown: 48, 60, 72, 84, 96 and 120 inches
- Room: same room and furniture for every comparison
- Purpose: demonstrate relative scale rather than prescribe a required size

How Large Will the Artwork Look?
Compare the same wall and approximately 84-inch sofa with six different
artwork widths. The room stays the same. Only the artwork changes.
48-Inch Artwork Room Image Goes Here
48"
Compared With An 84" Sofa
A 48-inch print is approximately 57% of the width of an 84-inch sofa.
It creates substantial wall presence while leaving generous negative
space around the artwork.
60-Inch Artwork Room Image Goes Here
60"
Compared With An 84" Sofa
A 60-inch print is approximately 71% of the sofa's width.
This creates a strong visual relationship between the artwork and
the furniture without dominating the entire wall.
72-Inch Artwork Room Image Goes Here
72"
Compared With An 84" Sofa
At approximately 86% of the sofa's width, a 72-inch photograph
begins to create the presence associated with large-scale fine art.
The image becomes one of the dominant visual elements in the room.
84-Inch Artwork Room Image Goes Here
84"
Same Width As The 84" Sofa
An 84-inch print is approximately the same width as the sofa beneath it.
At this scale, the artwork becomes a major architectural element
within the room.
96-Inch Artwork Room Image Goes Here
96"
Wider Than The 84" Sofa
A 96-inch photograph extends beyond the width of an 84-inch sofa.
On a sufficiently large wall, this oversized presentation can create
the feeling of a private gallery installation.
120-Inch Artwork Room Image Goes Here
120"
Ten Feet Of Fine Art
At ten feet wide, a 120-inch photograph is approximately 143%
of the width of an 84-inch sofa. This is architectural-scale artwork
for expansive walls and rooms where the image can command the space.
Compare Print Width to an 84-Inch Sofa
Another way to understand scale is to compare the width of the artwork
directly with the width of the furniture beneath it.
Why Artwork Often Looks Smaller Online
Your screen removes the architecture surrounding the artwork.
There is no sofa, bed, doorway, ceiling or wall providing a familiar
reference for scale.
That means a relatively small photograph can appear nearly as impressive
on a product page as a print several feet wider.
Once the artwork is placed on a large wall, however, scale becomes obvious.
This is why measuring your wall and nearby furniture before choosing
a print size can be extremely helpful.
