A City With A Soul
Photo Location: Old Town, Sacramento, CA
I walked Old Sacramento well after dark, when the day’s crowds had somewhat thinned, and the district finally went quiet (mind you, it doesn't get that quiet on the weekends). Coming around the corner, I found the What Cheer House lit from below, its long rows of windows glowing against a black sky while the cobblestones stretched out empty in front of it. A few people drifted under the boardwalk awnings, the bunting hung still, and for a few minutes the street looked the way it might have a century and a half ago. I knew it wouldn’t last; the next group of bar patrons was already rounding the far end of the block.
This part of town always fascinated me, I even booked a room to stay in the steam boat hotel nearby, just so I can experience of being there. The old wooden hollow sidewalks, storefront shingles with 19th century design, abandoned railroad tracks and cobble stone streets quite literally teleport you into a gold rush era. There is no other place like it. It has some heavy soul in it.
I made this image black and white to strip this scene down to light, stone and architecture, letting the Gold Rush bones of the city speak for themselves. It’s a print about history that’s still standing, and it brings a quiet, timeless weight to a modern living space, office or hospitality setting.
