Aspen Mania
Photo Location: Telluride, CO
There is a window in October when the aspens hit peak color and the mountain air goes still enough to hold a reflection. I found that window above a high-elevation lake — the entire canopy burning gold in every direction, the water below so calm it read as a second forest growing beneath the surface. Above and below, the same trees, the same light, the same unrepeatable afternoon. The reflection lasted until the first breath of evening wind crossed the surface and broke both halves of the image back into ordinary reality.
This is autumn in the American West at its most absolute — the brief, impossible week when the aspen groves turn simultaneously across an entire mountainside and the light goes warm and low and the air smells like cold and pine and something ending. A print that brings that specific stillness into any room it enters.
