There is a specific window under the Scripps Pier in La Jolla, just after first light, when the ocean has not yet decided what color it wants to be for the day. Low tide had pulled the water back, leaving it calm and glassy beneath the pilings, and the sky was still working through that soft transition from night into morning — pale blues and the kind of gentle pastel tones that only exist for a few minutes before the sun fully commits to the day. No hard light yet. No shadows yet. Just that quiet, suspended quality that mornings at the ocean have before anyone else is awake to see them.
